Dates

September 4-7, 2019

Organizer(s)

Prof. Holger HERZ, University of Fribourg

Prof. Christian ZEHNDER, University of Lausanne

Speakers

Prof. Loukas BALAFOUTAS, University of Innsbruck

Prof. Florian ENGLMAIER, LMU Munich

Prof. Christian THOENI, University of Lausanne

Description

This year's summer school will be a bit shorter than previous versions, but not less interesting. Three highly interesting speakers will present exciting research. The summer school (Sept 4-6) will be combined with the workshop (Sept. 7) so that participants also have the chance to present their own research and to get useful feedback from experienced scholars and fellow students.

All three speakers are established experts on behavioral and experimental economics.

Christian Thoeni will focus on cross-cultural behavioral experiments. He will not only present fascinating empirical results, but he will also highlight solutions to some of the methodological challenges involved in cross-cultural studies.

The research of Loukas Balafoutas covers a wide-range of topics ranging from studies on credence goods, over corruption research, to empirical investigations of affirmative action policies in the labor market. Although his work also includes applied theory and laboratory experiments, his lecture in the summer school will concentrate on his recent work on field experiments.

Florian Englmaier's expertise is on the behavioral economics of organizations and behavioral contract theory. His lectures will cover an interesting set of methodologically diverse recent studies including intriguing recent field experiments with participants in escape rooms.

Program

The summer school will take place in Kandersteg in the canton of Bern.

It will start on Wednesday evening (September 4) and will end on Friday evening (September 6). The summer school will be directly followed by the workshop on Saturday (September 7). There will be lectures on Thursday morning, Thursday afternoon, and Friday morning. Friday afternoon will be reserved for a social event that includes a short hiking tour, followed by a barbecue at a beautiful mountain lake. Please bring your hiking equipment with you (in particular, hiking or trekking shoes and a rain jacket). If you don't like hiking, there will be alternative options.

Before, between and after the lectures the lecturers and organizers will be available for personal meetings to discuss research.

Evaluation

Given the shorter duration of the summer school, there will be no group projects this time. However, participants who would like to take the school for credit will have the chance to work on a personal project after the summer school. The organizers will grade this project.
